The term big data is becoming very familiar to many research stakeholders in a very big way. Unfortunately, most sources that talk or write about big data cannot give a meaningful explanation or description of what it is. What most sources go on to say is that this is  data that come in large volumes making it challenging for conventional technologies and methods to cope with.

For example, when you open app and you respond by closing an advert without viewing it, special software and tools can collect your response in addition to responses of other million viewers on a real-time basis. Big data is collected on a real-time basis and in cases analysed on a real-time basis too. Thus it defies the conventional data collection, coding, transformation and then analysis and reporting. Online dashboards report analysed data as soon as it is collected.

Large volumes of data

Big data, as the name suggests is collected in extremely large volumes compared to traditional data collection processes. With big data, it is possible, for example, to collect data from 120 million users at exactly the same time. This data could be in millions of megabytes and will, therefore, require a high-calibre analysis and reporting system. Artificial intelligence systems, therefore, takeover the collection and analysis of this data.

Defiance of geographical and linguistic boundaries

Because of its online nature, big data defies geographical and linguistic barriers. Data can be collected on a local scale as well as on an international scale. This data is collected from entities using different languages.
